Then she leads him in prayer, asking God to make her kind with her hands and to let her trust whatever comes tonight. He panics silently. She closes by asking forgiveness in advance.

Her amen hangs in the air, and she calls out that she knows he is there, and that he was watching. Caught, he tries to walk away calmly, but she is already in his head. A nun, he marvels, of all people. Later, Veronica tells the Sister to come to her son for anything at all, confident he can manage. Alone, the nun asks if he heard her last night. He says no; she says he did. She asks whether he knows what Sunday means. It means her vows, she explains, after which everything she has never tried becomes something she will never try. And this, she tells him, is what she has been praying over.
Where the free run stops. Sunday is days off, his mother is in the house, and the free part stops on her admission that he is the subject of her prayers. Does he help her make up for lost time, or keep his distance and let her take those vows untouched?
