Before episode 1
The family vacation goes wrong the moment they land: his wife is laid low by bad prawns and stuck in the room. Not wanting to spoil the trip, she gives her husband one job, keep her daughter Harriet entertained, and tells him Harriet is in safe hands. Harriet, it turns out, has been waiting for a chance like this. He is a likable, flustered stepdad narrating his own panic, and the resort offers plenty of sun, curtains, and opportunity.
The people in it
- Harriet: His stepdaughter, cheeky and bold, who has carried a torch for him since the wedding.
- The stepdad: A flustered, good-natured husband narrating every bad decision while trying to stay on the right side.
- His wife: Harriet's mother, bedridden with food poisoning, trusting him completely and finally craving snacks.
The two free episodes
Episode 1Free, no account
Harriet greets her stepdad with the news that Mum has prescribed his company for the whole week. Mum, ill since the plane touched down, blames the prawns, begs him not to let her ruin things, and praises him as the perfect husband whose hands Harriet is safe in. He spirals over the size of his hands. Harriet has a use for them: sunscreen, since Mum normally does her back and her arms won't reach. His inner voice notes she is gorgeous; she compliments his rough palms, then mentions he skipped the front. Mum phones, and Harriet assures her he is being very hands-on, badly. Next she proposes a curtained VIP daybed, billed to Mum, purely for shade. He wonders if he should refuse.
Episode 2Free with a free account
Slipping in where she shouldn't be, Harriet is promptly told as much. She answers with a confession: at the wedding, while everyone watched him dance with her mother, she was watching only him, and she has wondered about him ever since. Today, she suggests, she could find out. He reels at how badly he misjudged her. They trade admissions about all the staring by the pool, his included. He protests that he is her stepdad; she says it makes no difference. She asks him to say out loud that he wants her, a line that lands clumsier than she planned. Then his wife calls, finally hungry, sending him for cookies from the shop. The reply: ten minutes.
Where the free run stops. A snack order ends the free run: his recovering wife wants cookies, and a ten-minute window is suddenly on the table. Whether he goes, stays, or tries to manage both is not answered here.
What kind of show it is
Cheeky vacation comedy with a British accent and an awkward narrator. Dialogue carries most of it, full of slang, double meanings, and his panicked asides, and the heat creeps up through sunscreen and curtains. Harriet is bold and playful; he is torn and funny about it. The sick wife back in the room keeps the stakes ridiculous.
