A royal court, a king who drinks until he passes out, and a brand-new queen who is no older than the king's grown son. The kingdom has spent ten years at war with a single enemy. The son, meanwhile, has more personal problems: his father's bride enjoys humiliating him in public, and she looks at him in a way no stepmother should. Where her loyalties actually lie is a question he has not thought to ask.

He obeys, the courtiers laugh, and her gaze never leaves him. Later they cross paths in a part of the castle where one of them does not belong. The king has drunk himself unconscious, she explains, and her maids gossip. Those maids oil her each night; tonight the job is his. His hands shake as he reminds her whose wife she is. She knows exactly. Then he discovers something tying her to his father's enemy of ten years, and she offers a choice: run to the king, or finish what he started.

Glasses rise for the queen. The son confesses he spent an hour at his father's door and said nothing. Not yet, she corrects: his silence already makes him a traitor, so he may as well savor it. Then the plan: her brother Lord Vale's army will reach the walls in two days, she will unbar the northern gate, and nobody in the castle will survive. Riders appear early. Pick a side now, she demands, and she can give him what he has always wanted.
