Before episode 1
Harvest Court has begun, a week of ceremony at the castle, and the queen has sent one of her servants to help the king dress. The choice is riskier than the queen knows: the servant has spent a year watching him from the kitchen, because he is the one person in the castle who bothers to thank the help. The king notices her at once. Between them stand his wife, a court demanding his presence, and the plain fact that a servant can hang for this.

She marvels that no one ever stopped a blow for her before. The queen arrives to remind him that the court expects him; the king replies that a court can wait for its sovereign. Before leaving, he asks what it would take to see her tonight. She turns down his bed at midnight, she tells him. Her instruction: be in it.

At midnight she finds him waiting early, and he is glad she came, calling it loyalty. She explains herself: for a year she has watched him from the kitchens, the only one under this roof who ever thanks a servant. He warns that she could be hanged for this. Then let it be worth it, she says, and gives him a choice: ask her to stay, or she goes back downstairs this minute. He does not send her away. Soon the queen is at the door, complaining about the late hour, wanting sleep, and asking why the bedchamber is locked. The king has a message relayed: tonight he sleeps alone. A voice dutifully calls it out to her.
Where the free run stops. A bolted door, a queen turned away and a servant still inside the king's chamber: that is where the free part leaves us. How the queen takes being shut out, and what the court makes of it, is not yet shown.
What kind of show it is
Courtly forbidden romance with a medieval flavor. Lines are formal and clipped, full of titles and threats, and the class gap does most of the heating. Tension outweighs explicit heat so far: the thrill lies in a servant's daring and a king openly defying his wife and his court.
